Moshi moshi!

“So… you and Noah,” Jace says later that night.

We are now back home.

Karaoke was a blast. I sang three K-Pop songs and one J-Rock song. I was surprised that I didn’t mess up my Japanese pronunciation at all, even Alfie seemed impressed. Nobody else even noticed that I wasn’t singing in Korean though.

Jace and I are sitting with our feet in the pool back at the house. Alfie ran off to do something, but will be back soon.

“Yeah,” I say to him. “I kind of can’t believe I caved.”

“It must have been the whole speaking Korean thing. I have to admit, even I was impressed,” Jace says. “Did he pronounce it right?”

“Eh,” I say. “It wasn’t bad, but he needs some work. It’s the thought that counts. I can tell he didn’t just use Google translate to figure out how to ask. His grammar was spot on, which makes it more impressive.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen him work so hard to get a girl,” Jace says. “But then again, I don’t think he’s actually ever asked a girl out before. Most girls ask him.”

“That’s crazy,” I say. “I would never ask a guy out. It’s the guy’s place to do it.”

“Most girls in America don’t think so.”

“I like Korea’s way better. I’d be way too nervous to ask a guy,” I admit.

“Guys get nervous too,” he says.

“Noah didn’t. I don’t think he’s ever been nervous with me. He’s always so calm. I’m the one who is nervous. He makes my heart beat fast and my stomach feels all weird,” I say. “I like him a lot.”

Jace remains quiet beside me, and I realize that he probably doesn’t want to hear about his best friend’s sister’s crush.

I change the subject.

“Did you like the Japanese song I sung?” I ask him.

“Japanese? You sung a Japanese song?”

“Yeah. Can you not tell the difference?”

He shakes his head. “I guess not,” he says. “How do you say hello in Korean?”

“Depends on how you want to say it. Do you want to say hello to me, your friend, or hello to an elder or somebody you’re meeting for the first time?” I ask.

“Um… if I wanted to say hello to you,” he says.

“Well, you would say yeoboseyo. Or yeo if you just want be even more informal,” I say. “Yeo is kind of like saying hey.”

“What about Japanese? Do I just say konichiwa?” he asks.

“No. It’s complicated. Konichiwa is a greeting, but not generally used between friends, and it’s only appropriate certain times of the day,” I explain. “If you’re answering the phone, you’d answer moshi moshi. But that isn’t appropriate when greeting somebody in person. I guess you would say yaho. Even though I’ve studied the language and am quite advanced, I’d have to live in Japan and have peers to really know the Japanese language.”

“Do you want to live there?”

I shrug. “I don’t know. Maybe. I haven’t thought a whole lot about it. I always enjoy visiting.”

“What do you have planned? For
